Ride Roosevelt’s Reading Wave
To
earn your Reading Wave and have it posted on the sixth grade surfboard, just do
one of the activities listed below. Also you can earn additional Ride
Roosevelt’s Reading Wave prizes by completing other activities from the
menu. You may only earn one prize per activity
even if you do the same activity more than once. Be creative in presenting your activity incorporating
a minimum of one skill or concept per category, remember to indicate the
title on which you are presenting. Also
to be eligible for this year’s Book Bash team, you must complete at least Three
(3) quality activities on this year’s Sunshine State books before February 1st.
Activities:
Book Report, Video Book Talk, PowerPoint, Glogster, PhotoStory, or others after authorized by your classroom teacher.
Skills and Concepts:
Recall & Remember:
____ Create a character glossary that lists and describes the book’s characters.
____ Describe a problem faced by one of book’s characters. Tell how he or she solves it.
____ If the book was a mystery, describe the mystery and explain how it was solved.
____ Explain what the title had to do with the book.
____ Summarize the book. Be sure to include the book’s climax and conclusion.
Understanding Concepts:
____ Illustrate a scene or chapter from the book. Include a caption.
____ Design a new cover for the book.
____ Tell about something one of the characters did or said that you did not like. Explain your feelings.
____ Which genre is the book? List at least three evidences to support your answer.
____ Begin a sequel. Be sure to include some of the characters from the original story.
____ How did the main character feel during the book? Provide evidence to support your answer.
Applying Skills & Concepts
____ Develop a pitch to a movie producer persuading him or her to adapt the book into a movie.
____ Explain what lesson or moral could be learned from the book.
____ Prepare 10 questions about the book that you would like to ask the author about in an interview.
____ Create a review of the book. Include details from the book in your critique.
____ Create a map showing the important places in the book. List these places in a map key.
Analyzing & Strategic Thinking
____ Write a short newspaper article or create a public service announcement that includes the 5w’s of the book (who, what, where, when, why, and how).
____ Create a different ending to the book. Be sure to tell why you changed it.
____ List five ways in which the main character is like you.
____ Find five words from the book that describe a character. Cite evidence from the book to support your choice of words.
____ Compare two characters from the book using a Venn diagram or other visual representation.
____ Create a T-chart. On one side, write down significant quotes. On the other, comment on and analyze the quotes.
Evaluating:
____ Create a book trailer promoting the book. Don’t spoil the book! Your goal is to get viewers to read the book.
____ If you could only save one characters from the book in the event of a disaster, which one would it be and why?
____ Which chapter or scene did you think was the most interesting? Explain your answer.
____ Think of a character who changed over the course of the book. Compare his or her values, attitudes, and morals at the beginning of the book to those at the end.
____ Design costumes for the book’s characters. Be sure to explain your designs.
____ If you had the opportunity to edit this book before it was published, what constructive criticism or feedback would you have given the author?
____ Create an eight-pane comic strip with captions showing the main events of the book.
____ Create your own 10-question test on the book.
____ Design a poster (or Glogster!) promoting the book. Include a short summary persuading others to read it.
____ Plan a party for the book’s characters. Create a menu, choose decorations, and pick games, etc. Give reasons to support your choices.
